The new TWX670 from Avidyne is a third-generation lightning-based weather detection system, providing a simple and easy to you colour-contoured display showing an instantaneous picture of any surrounding weather.

Great Accuracy Means Truly Tactical Weather Detection

Although other lightning detection systems exist, Avidyne’s TWX670 is the first and currently the only real time, tactical, colour weather avoidance solution. This system accurately detects and clearly displays in real time any electrical discharges which are the primary indicator of a thunderstorm in real time, regardless of whether your aircraft is manoeuvring. The accuracy of the TWX670 over previous-generation lightning detection systems is significantly improved, with the TWX670 providing true tactical weather avoidance in the critical 0 – 25nm range. This really is a perfect complement to the strategic benefits to be taken advantage of with satellite-based datalink weather.

Completing the Picture

Precipitation may be more noticeable but it is not as good a determinant of the imminence of a dangerous thunderstorm as lightning. The TWX670 displays the intensity of storm cells in colour contours, taking away the guess-work that was always required when attempting to interpret previous weather displays. The colour-contoured map shows the electrical activity of a thunderstorm over time, allowing a pilot to determine, and therefore avoid, the areas of greatest intensity. Areas with potential for convective wind shear, turbulence, microbursts, hail and icing are also easily identifiable.

TWxCell Mode™

The TWxCell mode within the TWX670 is colour-contoured, with each cell grid displayed as a hexagonal array of cell weights (colours). The Colour-filled hexagons clearly highlight the most intense areas of activity within the thunderstorm, showing the pilot a visually contoured colour display with different dynamic sectors. Avidyne’s TWxCell Mode allows a pilot to identify the most intense regions of thunderstorm activity in an instant.

Regardless of the specific number of lightning strikes, the TWX670 will combine the data of all lightning activity that occurs throughout a running three-minute period. This results in a meaningful dynamic map displaying lightning discharge rate and density, providing an immediate visual acquisition of the critical information needed. You won’t need to spend any time watching for discrete events to calculate the intensity of thunderstorm activity with the TWX670 fitted to your aircraft.

Strike Mode

In the TWX670’s Strike Mode, up to 1024 strikes are displayed for up to 3 minutes. Each strike that is transmitted will include range, bearing, and weight (colour). It is the regional activity that determines the colour of the strike and not age. Essentially this means that strikes that are more recent but a greater distance away can’t “drown out” those flashes that are closer to your position but less recent. Pilots transitioning from a less capable system will be reassured by the comfort this system provides. The colour enhancement clearly displays areas of high intensity while still granting you a view of the discrete events.

Versatile MHD300

The MHD300 from Avidyne can display the TWX670 Lightning, as well as traffic when interfaced with the TAS600-Series TAS, and also TAWS when interfaced with a Honeywell EGPWS system. Due to the standard 3-ATI form factor, the MHD300 can be easily installed in virtually any fixed-wing or rotorcraft panel. NVG-compatible versions are also available.
